Product Overview

What Is Vitamin E Acetate (CAS 7695-91-2)?

Vitamin E Acetate (DL-α-tocopheryl acetate, all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate; CAS 7695-91-2) is the acetic acid ester of synthetic α-tocopherol. It is a clear, colourless to yellowish, viscous oil that is practically insoluble in water and freely soluble in oils and ethanol. Capping the phenolic –OH of vitamin E as an acetate makes it far more stable to air and light than free tocopherol, which is why it is the workhorse vitamin E for softgels, tablets, creams and premixes.

In the body and, more slowly, in the skin, the ester is hydrolysed to release α-tocopherol, the active vitamin. That is why it is used as a vitamin E source in supplements, fortified foods and animal feed, and as a skin-conditioning ingredient in creams, lotions and hair oils. It is not an antioxidant for the product itself, because the active –OH group is blocked. It is also not suitable for inhalation products: it has been strongly linked to vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI).

As a chemical supplier in Mumbai, Chelora Pharmachem supplies vitamin E acetate as 98% oil and as 50% cold-water-soluble (CWS) powder, in pharmacopoeia, food and feed grades, to nutraceutical, pharma, cosmetic, food and feed manufacturers across India. Every supply comes with a batch-wise COA, SDS/MSDS and specification, from trial lots and samples to regular bulk orders planned with you. Softgel makers can also source pharma-grade gelatin from us for the capsule shell.

In Depth

More About Vitamin E Acetate (CAS 7695-91-2)

  • Structure and chemical nature

Vitamin E acetate is a chromanol ring carrying three methyl groups, joined to a saturated 16-carbon phytyl tail, with the ring’s phenolic –OH esterified as an acetate. It has three chiral centres, so eight stereoisomers are possible. The synthetic ‘dl’ or all-rac product contains all eight in about equal amounts, while natural vitamin E is a single isomer, RRR.

  • Acetate versus free tocopherol

Free α-tocopherol is an antioxidant: its –OH group gives up a hydrogen atom to stop oxidation, and in doing so it is consumed and darkens. Blocking that group as an acetate makes the ester stable in storage and processing, but not an antioxidant in the pack. Digestive and skin enzymes later split the ester, releasing α-tocopherol, which then acts as vitamin E.

  • How it is manufactured

Synthetic all-rac-α-tocopherol is made by condensing trimethylhydroquinone with isophytol under acid catalysis to build the chromane ring and side chain. The tocopherol is then acetylated, typically with acetic anhydride, and purified by distillation. Natural d-α-tocopheryl acetate starts instead from tocopherols recovered from vegetable oil refining, which are concentrated, converted to the alpha form and esterified.

  • Role in softgels and supplements

The oil grade is filled directly into softgels, alone or blended with other oils, and the 50% CWS powder goes into tablets, hard capsules, sachets and dry premixes. Under the traditional convention, 1 mg of DL-α-tocopheryl acetate equals 1 IU of vitamin E; current US labelling counts about 455 mg of α-tocopherol per gram, because only the 2R isomers are counted.

  • What buyers should check

Confirm the form and isomer first: synthetic dl (all-rac) or natural d (RRR), acetate or free tocopherol, oil or 50% powder. Then compare assay, identification, optical rotation (near zero for dl), acidity, related substances, elemental impurities and residual solvents. For the powder, also check the carrier, loss on drying and particle size. Ask for the COA and SDS of the actual batch.

  • Hazard classification

Not classified as hazardous under GHS or the EU CLP Regulation in major supplier SDSs. Spilled oil makes floors very slippery. It must not be used in inhalation or vaping products: inhaled vitamin E acetate has been strongly linked to lung injury (EVALI). Check the SDS of the batch for the classification that applies.

  • Personal protection

Wear safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves, and use a dust mask where the powder form can become airborne. Use general ventilation and follow good industrial hygiene.

  • Storage

Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, dry place, protected from light and heat, ideally under nitrogen once opened. Store away from strong oxidising agents and strong alkalis.

  • Transport

Vitamin E acetate has no UN number and is generally not regulated as a dangerous good for road, sea or air transport. Always check the transport section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

  • Spills and environment

Soak up spilled oil with an inert absorbent, sweep up powder without raising dust, and collect it in closed containers for disposal. It is not readily biodegradable, so keep it out of drains, soil and water courses.

The Chemistry

From Isophytol to Vitamin E Acetate

Made

Ring built, then capped

Trimethylhydroquinone and isophytol are condensed with an acid catalyst to form all-rac-α-tocopherol. Acetylating its phenolic –OH, usually with acetic anhydride, gives the acetate, which is distilled and then sold as oil or spray-dried onto a carrier as 50% powder.

Used

Released as vitamin E

In the gut, and more slowly in the skin, esterases split off the acetate group and release α-tocopherol, the form the body uses. Until then the ester stays stable through softgel filling, tableting, premixing and pelleting, which is why formulators prefer it to free tocopherol.

Tested

Checked before it ships

Each batch is reported on a COA covering appearance, identification, GC assay, optical rotation, acidity, related substances, elemental impurities and residual solvents. The CWS powder COA adds loss on drying and particle size, so your QC team can release it quickly.

Stored

Sealed, cool and dark

The ester resists oxidation far better than free tocopherol, but it is still sensitive to light and air over time. Keep drums closed, preferably under nitrogen, away from heat and sunlight, and keep the powder dry. Follow the SDS for handling.

What is Vitamin E Acetate used for?

Vitamin E acetate (CAS 7695-91-2) is the stable form of vitamin E used in softgels, multivitamin tablets and premixes, fortified foods and beverages, and animal feed. It is also a skin-conditioning ingredient in creams, lotions, serums and hair oils, where it appears on labels as tocopheryl acetate.

What is the CAS number of Vitamin E Acetate?

The CAS number of DL-α-tocopheryl acetate (all-rac) is 7695-91-2, with EC number 231-710-0. Some suppliers and databases also list 52225-20-4 for the all-rac form. Natural d-α-tocopheryl acetate (RRR) has its own CAS number, 58-95-7, so state which one you need.

Is vitamin E acetate the same as DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate?

Usually, yes. In bulk trade, vitamin E acetate normally means synthetic DL-α-tocopheryl acetate, also called all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate, CAS 7695-91-2. It is not the same as free tocopherol: the acetate ester is far more stable in storage and is converted to tocopherol in the body. Natural d-α-tocopheryl acetate also exists, so confirm the form on your enquiry.

What is the difference between natural d-alpha and synthetic dl-alpha vitamin E?

Natural d-α (RRR) vitamin E is a single stereoisomer from vegetable oils. Synthetic dl-α (all-rac) is made chemically and contains eight stereoisomers in about equal amounts, only half of which (the 2R forms) the body retains well. So by weight, the synthetic form has roughly half to three-quarters of the activity of the natural form, depending on the convention used.

Which grades of vitamin E acetate do you supply?

We supply 98% oil to IP, BP, USP and EP, 50% CWS powder for tablets and premixes, and food (FCC) and feed grades, subject to availability. Natural d-α-tocopheryl acetate can be sourced on request. Tell us the form, grade and carrier requirements when you enquire.

Can vitamin E acetate be used in vape or inhalation products?

No. Vitamin E acetate was found in the lung fluid of 48 of 51 patients with vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) in a CDC-led study published in 2020, and health authorities strongly linked it to the outbreak. We do not supply it for inhalation or vaping products.

How should Vitamin E Acetate be stored?

Keep it in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place, protected from light and heat, and away from strong oxidising agents and alkalis. Blanket opened drums of oil with nitrogen, and keep the powder dry. Follow the storage section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

What is the HS code for Vitamin E Acetate?

Vitamin E acetate is generally classified under HS subheading 2936.28, which covers vitamin E and its derivatives. Powder forms on a carrier may be classified differently, so confirm the full national tariff code with your customs broker before import or export.

Is Vitamin E Acetate hazardous?

It is not classified as hazardous under GHS or the EU CLP Regulation in major supplier SDSs. Spilled oil is very slippery, the powder should not be breathed in as dust, and it must never be inhaled as a vapour. Read the SDS before handling.

Is Vitamin E Acetate a dangerous good for transport?

No. Vitamin E acetate has no UN number and is generally not regulated as a dangerous good for road, sea or air transport. Always check the transport section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

Which documents come with each supply?

We provide a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis (COA), SDS/MSDS and specifications. Additional documents for vendor qualification can be arranged on request.

Can I order trial or sample quantities?

Yes. We handle requirements from samples and trial lots for R&D, formulation and vendor approval up to regular bulk supply for commercial production, subject to product availability.

Where in India do you deliver Vitamin E Acetate?
