Product Overview

What Is Hydroxylamine Sulfate (CAS 10039-54-0)?

Hydroxylamine sulfate (hydroxylammonium sulphate, HAS, bis(hydroxylammonium) sulphate; CAS 10039-54-0) is the sulphate salt of hydroxylamine, (NH3OH)2SO4. It is a white, slightly hygroscopic, odourless crystalline powder that dissolves freely in water to give an acidic solution. Free hydroxylamine is unstable, so this salt is the practical way to store, ship and dose it: each kilogram carries about 0.40 kg of hydroxylamine, released in the reactor when a base is added, which is why chemists often call it a hydroxylamine source rather than a reagent in its own right.

Its main job is turning aldehydes and ketones into oximes, esters into hydroxamic acids and nitriles into amidoximes, so it appears early in many API and agrochemical routes, including isoxazole rings and oxime-carbamate insecticides. On a much larger scale, cyclohexanone oxime made with hydroxylamine sulphate is the step before caprolactam and nylon 6. It is also a reducing agent and antioxidant in colour photographic developers, rubber and polymer production, metal surface treatment and analytical chemistry.

As a chemical supplier in Mumbai, Chelora Pharmachem supplies technical, laboratory and analytical-grade hydroxylamine sulfate to API, agrochemical, dye and specialty-chemical manufacturers across India, with a batch-wise COA, SDS/MSDS and specification, from trial lots to regular bulk supply. Because it is a Class 8 dangerous good, every dispatch moves with proper labelling and transport documents. For the chlorination and acylation steps that often run in the same plants, we also supply Thionyl Chloride.

In Depth

More About Hydroxylamine Sulfate (CAS 10039-54-0)

  • Structure and chemical nature

Hydroxylamine sulfate is an ionic salt: two hydroxylammonium cations, NH₃OH⁺, balance one sulphate anion. The salt is far more stable than free hydroxylamine, which is why industry handles hydroxylamine in this form. It dissolves freely in water and gives a mildly acidic solution, because the hydroxylammonium ion is a weak acid. It is also a strong reducing agent, which explains its uses in developers, rubber and analysis.

  • Reactivity in synthesis

In the reactor, a base such as sodium hydroxide, sodium acetate, sodium carbonate or ammonia releases free hydroxylamine, which attacks carbonyl groups. Aldehydes and ketones give oximes, esters give hydroxamic acids, nitriles give amidoximes and isocyanates give N-hydroxyureas. Oximes can then be reduced to amines, rearranged to amides or cyclised into isoxazoles. Heat and strong alkali together must be controlled, as free hydroxylamine can decompose violently.

  • How it is manufactured

Industrial routes include the Raschig process, in which nitrite is reduced with bisulphite and sulphur dioxide at low temperature and the hydroxylamine disulphonate formed is hydrolysed; catalytic hydrogenation of nitric oxide over platinum in sulphuric acid; and hydrolysis of methyl ethyl ketone oxime with sulphuric acid. The solution is then crystallised, separated from ammonium sulphate and dried to the purity required.

  • Role in oxime and API synthesis

Oxime formation is often an early step in a synthesis. The oxime may be the target itself, be reduced to a primary amine, or be cyclised with a 1,3-dicarbonyl compound into an isoxazole ring, found in several sulfa drugs. Hydroxamic acids, used as metal-binding groups in enzyme-inhibitor APIs, are made from esters and hydroxylamine. Choosing the sulphate rather than the hydrochloride keeps chloride out of the process.

  • What buyers should check

Confirm the grade first, then compare assay, ammonium sulphate content, pH, chloride, iron and heavy metals, and moisture, since the salt is slightly hygroscopic. Iron and other metals can catalyse hydroxylamine decomposition, so low metal content matters for both quality and safety. Check the packing too: lined bags or drums, never bare metal containers. Ask for the COA and SDS of the actual batch.

The Chemistry

From Nitrite Salts to Oximes

Made

By the Raschig or hydrogenation route

Nitrite is reduced with bisulphite and sulphur dioxide, or nitric oxide is hydrogenated over a platinum catalyst in sulphuric acid. Either way the hydroxylamine ends up as its sulphate salt, which is crystallised, separated from ammonium sulphate and dried.

Used

Freed by base, then reacted

A base releases hydroxylamine in situ, which condenses with a ketone or aldehyde to give an oxime and water, or reacts with an ester to give a hydroxamic acid. Careful dosing, temperature and pH control keep the reaction clean and safe.

Tested

Checked before it ships

Each batch is reported on a COA covering appearance, identification, assay, pH, ammonium sulphate, chloride, iron, heavy metals and sulphated ash, so your QC team can compare it with your specification and release it quickly for production.

Stored

Dry, cool and away from alkali

It is slightly hygroscopic and decomposes on heating. Keep lined bags and drums closed, cool and dry, away from bases, oxidisers, nitrites and metals, never in bare metal containers, and follow the SDS for handling and protective equipment.

Request a Quote
What is Hydroxylamine Sulfate used for?

Hydroxylamine sulfate (CAS 10039-54-0) is used to make oximes, hydroxamic acids, amidoximes and isoxazoles in API and agrochemical synthesis, and cyclohexanone oxime for caprolactam and nylon 6. It is also a reducing agent and stabiliser in colour photographic developers, rubber and polymer production, metal surface treatment and laboratory analysis.

What is the CAS number of Hydroxylamine Sulfate?

The CAS number is 10039-54-0 and the EC number is 233-118-8. Its formula is (NH3OH)2SO4 (H8N2O6S) and its molar mass is 164.14 g/mol. Quoting the CAS number avoids confusion with hydroxylammonium hydrogen sulphate (CAS 10046-00-1) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (CAS 5470-11-1).

Is hydroxylammonium sulphate the same as hydroxylamine sulfate?

Yes. Hydroxylamine sulfate, hydroxylammonium sulphate, bis(hydroxylammonium) sulphate and HAS are names for the same substance, CAS 10039-54-0. It is sometimes called hydroxylamine neutral sulphate to tell it apart from the acid (hydrogen) sulphate.

What is the difference between hydroxylamine sulfate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride?

Both are stable salts that release hydroxylamine when a base is added. Hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH·HCl, CAS 5470-11-1) brings chloride into the process, while the sulphate brings sulphate and is the form used at industrial scale, as in caprolactam production. Many oxime steps can use either, but check your validated route before switching.

How much hydroxylamine does hydroxylamine sulfate contain?

About 40.2% by weight. One mole of the salt (164.14 g) carries two moles of hydroxylamine (2 × 33.03 g), so roughly 2.5 kg of hydroxylamine sulfate supplies 1 kg of hydroxylamine, before allowing for assay and process losses.

Which grades of hydroxylamine sulfate do you supply?

We supply technical grade for industrial and synthesis use, and laboratory (LR) and analytical reagent (AR) grades, subject to availability. Tell us the grade, the assay and impurity limits you need, and the pack size when you enquire.

How should Hydroxylamine Sulfate be stored?

Keep it in tightly closed, lined, non-metal containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store, away from heat, alkalis, oxidising agents, nitrites and metals. It is slightly hygroscopic. Follow the storage section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

What is the HS code for Hydroxylamine Sulfate?

Hydroxylamine sulfate is generally classified under HS subheading 2825.10, which covers hydrazine, hydroxylamine and their inorganic salts; India uses 2825 10 40 for hydroxylamine sulphate. Confirm the full national tariff code with your customs broker before import or export.

Is Hydroxylamine Sulfate hazardous?

Yes. It is harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin, irritates skin and eyes, may cause skin allergy, is suspected of causing cancer, may damage the blood on repeated exposure, is corrosive to metals and is very toxic to aquatic life. It can decompose violently if heated, especially with alkalis. Read the SDS before handling.

Is Hydroxylamine Sulfate a dangerous good for transport?

Yes. It is regulated as UN 2865, Hydroxylamine sulphate, Class 8 (corrosive), packing group III, for road, sea and air, and may be marked as a marine pollutant for sea transport. Always check the transport section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

Which documents come with each supply?

We provide a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis (COA), SDS/MSDS and specifications. Additional documents for vendor qualification can be arranged on request.

Can I order trial or sample quantities?

Yes. We handle requirements from samples and trial lots for R&D, process development and vendor approval up to regular bulk supply for commercial production, subject to product availability.
