Product Overview

What Is Niacinamide (CAS 98-92-0)?

Niacinamide (nicotinamide, vitamin B3, pyridine-3-carboxamide; CAS 98-92-0) is the amide form of vitamin B3. It is a white crystalline powder or colourless crystals, very soluble in water and freely soluble in ethanol, with a melting range of 128–131 °C. In the body it is built into the coenzymes NAD and NADP, which is why it is used to prevent and treat niacin deficiency (pellagra) and appears in almost every B-complex and multivitamin formula.

Niacinamide is also one of the most widely used actives in skin care. Serums, moisturisers and sunscreens use it, typically at about 2–10%, to support the skin barrier and to target uneven tone, redness and oiliness. Food manufacturers add it to fortified flour, breakfast cereals and beverages, and feed manufacturers use it in vitamin premixes for poultry, pigs and cattle. Unlike nicotinic acid (niacin), it does not cause the skin flushing seen at higher doses, so it is the preferred form for most of these uses.

As a chemical supplier in Mumbai, Chelora Pharmachem supplies niacinamide in IP, BP, USP and EP pharmacopoeia grades, FCC food grade, cosmetic grade and feed grade to formulation, nutraceutical, cosmetic, food and feed manufacturers across India, with a batch-wise COA, SDS/MSDS and specification, from sample lots to regular bulk supply. Our team can also help you match the grade and physical form to your process. We also supply Folic Acid, another B vitamin used in tablets, premixes and food fortification.

In Depth

More About Niacinamide (CAS 98-92-0)

  • Structure and chemical nature

Niacinamide is a pyridine ring with a carboxamide group (–CONH₂) at the 3-position. The ring nitrogen is only weakly basic (pKa about 3.3), so a 5% solution in water is close to neutral, at pH 6.0–7.5. It is a small, polar, highly water-soluble molecule that is stable to heat and light in normal handling, which makes it easy to formulate.

  • How it works

In the body niacinamide is converted into NAD and NADP, coenzymes involved in hundreds of energy and repair reactions. That is its vitamin role. On the skin, it is used to support barrier lipids and reduce visible redness, oiliness and uneven tone. Under strong acid or alkali, and heat, the amide can hydrolyse to nicotinic acid, which formulators keep low.

  • How it is manufactured

Most commercial niacinamide starts from 3-methylpyridine (3-picoline). Ammoxidation with ammonia and air over a catalyst gives 3-cyanopyridine, which is then partially hydrolysed to the amide. Producers use either controlled chemical hydrolysis or a nitrile hydratase enzyme that stops at the amide instead of going on to nicotinic acid. The crude product is crystallised and dried to the required grade.

  • Role in vitamin formulations

Niacinamide is the usual source of vitamin B3 in tablets, capsules, syrups and premixes because it is stable, very soluble and does not cause the flushing seen with nicotinic acid. It blends well with other B vitamins and minerals. Tablet makers often prefer granular or directly compressible forms, and premix makers often prefer free-flowing powder, so the physical form matters as much as the assay.

  • What buyers should check

Confirm the grade first (IP, BP, USP, EP, FCC, cosmetic or feed), then compare assay, melting range, pH of solution, clarity and colour of solution, loss on drying, sulphated ash and related substances. Cosmetic buyers usually also ask for a low nicotinic acid content, while tablet and premix makers check particle size and flow. Ask for the COA and SDS of the actual batch.

The Chemistry

From 3-Picoline to Vitamin B3

Made

Nitrile to amide

3-Methylpyridine is converted by ammoxidation into 3-cyanopyridine. Controlled hydrolysis, chemical or with a nitrile hydratase enzyme, adds one molecule of water to the nitrile group to give niacinamide, which is crystallised and dried to the grade required.

Used

Into tablets, serums and premixes

Niacinamide is blended into vitamin tablets and capsules, dissolved into the water phase of serums and creams, and mixed into food and feed premixes. Its high water solubility and near-neutral pH make it one of the easier vitamins to formulate.

Tested

Checked before it ships

Each batch is reported on a COA covering appearance, identification, assay, melting range, pH, loss on drying, sulphated ash and related substances such as nicotinic acid, so your QC team can release it quickly against the pharmacopoeia you ordered.

Stored

Dry and tightly closed

Niacinamide is stable but takes up moisture from humid air, which can make the powder cake. Keep bags and drums tightly closed in a cool, dry store, away from strong acids, strong bases and strong oxidising agents, and follow the SDS for handling.

What is Niacinamide used for?

Niacinamide (CAS 98-92-0) is the vitamin B3 used in B-complex and multivitamin tablets, capsules and syrups, and in medicines for niacin deficiency. It is also a leading skin-care active in serums, creams and sunscreens, and is used in fortified flour, cereals and beverages and in animal feed premixes.

What is the CAS number of Niacinamide?

The CAS number is 98-92-0 and the EC number is 202-713-4. Its formula is C6H6N2O and its molar mass is 122.13 g/mol. Quoting the CAS number on your enquiry avoids confusion with nicotinic acid (niacin), which is CAS 59-67-6.

Is niacinamide the same as nicotinamide and vitamin B3?

Yes. Niacinamide and nicotinamide are two names for the same substance, pyridine-3-carboxamide, CAS 98-92-0. It is one of the two forms of vitamin B3; the other is nicotinic acid (niacin).

What is the difference between niacinamide and niacin (nicotinic acid)?

Both are vitamin B3, but they are different chemicals. Niacin is nicotinic acid (pyridine-3-carboxylic acid, CAS 59-67-6); niacinamide is its amide (CAS 98-92-0). Niacin in high doses causes skin flushing, while niacinamide does not, which is why niacinamide is preferred in supplements and skin care. Order by CAS number to avoid mix-ups.

Which grades of niacinamide do you supply?

We supply pharmacopoeia grades to IP, BP, USP and EP, FCC food grade, cosmetic grade and feed grade, subject to availability. Tell us the grade, the application and any particle-size or nicotinic acid requirement when you enquire.

What concentration of niacinamide is used in skin-care serums?

Many face serums and moisturisers use niacinamide at about 2–5%, and some serums go up to around 10%. The right level depends on the product, the other actives and the market’s rules, so formulators set it after their own stability and skin-compatibility testing.

How should Niacinamide be stored?

Keep it in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry and well-ventilated store, protected from moisture and away from strong acids, strong bases and strong oxidising agents. Follow the storage section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

What is the HS code for Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is generally classified under HS subheading 2936.29, other vitamins and their derivatives, unmixed. In the Indian tariff it falls under 2936 29 20, which covers nicotinic acid and nicotinamide. Confirm the full code with your customs broker before import or export.

Is Niacinamide hazardous?

It has low hazard. It has no EU harmonised classification, but the REACH registration and many supplier SDS classify it as causing serious eye irritation (H319), and fine dust can form combustible mixtures with air. Read the SDS before handling, and use eye protection, gloves and dust control.

Is Niacinamide a dangerous good for transport?

Niacinamide is generally not regulated as a dangerous good for road, sea or air transport. Always check the transport section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

Which documents come with each supply?

We provide a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis (COA), SDS/MSDS and specifications. Additional documents for vendor qualification can be arranged on request.

Can I order trial or sample quantities?

Yes. We handle requirements from samples and trial lots for R&D, formulation and vendor approval up to regular bulk supply for commercial production, subject to product availability.
