Product Overview

What Is 4-Aminophenol (CAS 123-30-8)?

4-Aminophenol (para-aminophenol, p-aminophenol or PAP; CAS 123-30-8) is an aromatic compound with an amino group (–NH₂) and a hydroxyl group (–OH) on opposite carbons of a benzene ring. It is a white to light-brown crystalline powder and one of the most important intermediates in the pharmaceutical industry, because it is the direct precursor of Paracetamol (acetaminophen).

India is one of the world’s major Paracetamol producers, so bulk drug plants need a steady supply of high-purity 4-Aminophenol with consistent colour, assay and impurity profile. Beyond Paracetamol, the same molecule is used in oxidative hair dyes, sulfur and azo dyes, photographic developers and fine-chemical synthesis.

As a chemical supplier in Mumbai, Chelora Pharmachem supplies 4-Aminophenol to manufacturers across India, sourcing worldwide when local supply is short, with a batch-wise COA, SDS/MSDS and specification on every order.

In Depth

More About 4-Aminophenol (CAS 123-30-8)

  • Structure and chemical nature

4-Aminophenol, also written as 4-hydroxyaniline, belongs to the aminophenol family. Its amino group is weakly basic and its phenolic hydroxyl group is weakly acidic, so it can form salts with both strong acids and strong bases. With the two groups para to each other, the ring is electron-rich and easily oxidised.

  • Reactivity in synthesis

The amino group is the more nucleophilic site, so acylating agents such as acetic anhydride react at the nitrogen first. This selectivity is what makes clean Paracetamol synthesis possible. The amino group can also be diazotised for azo dye chemistry, and the compound's reducing power is why it works as a photographic developer.

  • How it is manufactured

The main commercial routes start from nitrobenzene or 4-nitrophenol. Catalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene in dilute sulfuric acid passes through phenylhydroxylamine, which rearranges to 4-Aminophenol, with aniline as the main by-product. Reducing 4-nitrophenol with hydrogen or iron is the other established route.

  • Role in Paracetamol production

Paracetamol is made by acetylating 4-Aminophenol, then crystallising and purifying the crude product. Pharmacopoeias limit residual 4-Aminophenol in the finished API, so the reaction and purification have to be well controlled, and the quality of the incoming material affects colour, yield and the purification load.

  • What buyers should check

Compare assay, appearance and colour, melting range, loss on drying, ash and related substances against your specification. Dark or strongly coloured material can point to oxidation, so check packing integrity, batch date and storage conditions on receipt. Ask for the COA and SDS of the actual batch, and test a sample during vendor qualification.

The Chemistry

From Nitro Compound to Paracetamol

Made

By reducing a nitro compound

Industrially, 4-Aminophenol is made by hydrogenating nitrobenzene in acid, which rearranges to the para product (the Bamberger rearrangement), or by reducing 4-nitrophenol.

Used

Acetylated into Paracetamol

Acetic anhydride puts an acetyl group on the nitrogen, giving N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide: Paracetamol. Unreacted 4-Aminophenol is a controlled impurity in the finished API, so purity going in matters.

Tested

Checked before it ships

Each batch is reported on a COA covering appearance, identification, assay, melting range, loss on drying, ash and related substances, so your QC team can release it quickly.

Stored

Dry, sealed and dark

It oxidises slowly in air and light and turns pink to brown. Keep drums closed, cool and dry, and follow the SDS for handling and protective equipment.

Request a Quote
What is 4-Aminophenol used for?

4-Aminophenol (CAS 123-30-8) is the key starting material for Paracetamol (Acetaminophen), one of the most widely produced APIs. It is also used to make hair dyes, other dyes and photographic developers.

What is the CAS number of 4-Aminophenol?

The CAS number is 123-30-8. Its formula is C6H7NO and its molar mass is 109.13 g/mol. Quoting the CAS number on your enquiry avoids confusion with its isomers, 2-Aminophenol and 3-Aminophenol.

Is p-aminophenol the same as 4-Aminophenol?

Yes. 4-Aminophenol, p-aminophenol, para-aminophenol, PAP and 4-hydroxyaniline are names for the same substance, CAS 123-30-8.

What is the difference between 4-Aminophenol and 2-Aminophenol?

They are isomers with the same formula. In 4-Aminophenol the amino and hydroxyl groups sit on opposite carbons of the ring (para), while in 2-Aminophenol they are next to each other (ortho). They have different CAS numbers and uses, and only 4-Aminophenol is the Paracetamol starting material.

How much 4-Aminophenol is needed per kg of Paracetamol?

In theory about 0.72 kg, from the molar masses: 109.13 g/mol for 4-Aminophenol and 151.16 g/mol for Paracetamol. Real consumption is a little higher, depending on your process yield.

Why does 4-Aminophenol turn pink or brown?

It oxidises slowly when exposed to air and light, forming coloured products. That is why it is packed in closed, lined containers and should be stored cool, dry and away from light. Strongly discoloured material should be checked against the specification before use.

How should 4-Aminophenol be stored?

Keep it in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry and well-ventilated store, protected from light and air and away from strong oxidising agents. Follow the storage section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

What is the HS code for 4-Aminophenol?

4-Aminophenol is generally classified under HS subheading 2922.29, which covers amino-phenols. Confirm the full national tariff code with your customs broker before import or export.

Is 4-Aminophenol hazardous?

Yes. It is harmful if swallowed or inhaled, suspected of causing genetic defects and very toxic to aquatic life, and it travels as a dangerous good (UN 2512, class 6.1). Read the SDS before handling, and use gloves, eye protection and dust control.

Which documents come with each supply?

We provide a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis (COA), SDS/MSDS and specifications. Additional documents for vendor qualification can be arranged on request.

Can I order trial or sample quantities?

Yes. We handle requirements from samples and trial lots for R&D and vendor approval up to regular bulk supply for commercial production, subject to product availability.

Where in India do you deliver 4-Aminophenol?

We supply buyers across India, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim, from our centralized sales office in Mumbai.
