Product Overview

What Is Calcium Pantothenate (CAS 137-08-6)?

Calcium Pantothenate (calcium D-pantothenate, vitamin B5 calcium salt; CAS 137-08-6) is the calcium salt of D-pantothenic acid, vitamin B5. It is a white, slightly hygroscopic powder, freely soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol, that decomposes at about 195 °C. Free pantothenic acid is an unstable, viscous oil, so this crystalline salt is the usual way vitamin B5 is weighed, blended and sold. In the body it is built into coenzyme A, which is central to the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins.

Calcium pantothenate is the standard vitamin B5 source in B-complex and multivitamin tablets, capsules and syrups, and in fortified cereals, infant and clinical nutrition and health drinks. Feed manufacturers use 98% feed grade in vitamin premixes for pigs and poultry, and it also appears in shampoos, hair tonics and cell-culture media. Only the D-form is biologically active: racemic DL-calcium pantothenate (CAS 6381-63-1) has about half the activity, and panthenol, the related alcohol used widely in cosmetics, is a different substance.

As a chemical supplier in Mumbai, Chelora Pharmachem supplies calcium pantothenate in IP, BP, USP and EP pharmacopoeia grades, FCC food grade and 98% feed grade to formulation, nutraceutical, food, premix and personal-care manufacturers across India, with a batch-wise COA, SDS/MSDS and specification, from sample lots to regular bulk supply. Our team can help you match the grade and physical form, powder or granular, to your process. We also supply Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), another B vitamin used alongside it in tablets and premixes.

In Depth

More About Calcium Pantothenate (CAS 137-08-6)

  • Structure and chemical nature

Each pantothenate anion is a D-pantoic acid unit joined through an amide bond to β-alanine, ending in a carboxylate. Two anions balance one calcium ion, giving C₁₈H₃₂CaN₂O₁₀. The single stereocentre has the (R) configuration, which makes the salt dextrorotatory, with a specific rotation of about +25.5° to +27.5°. It contains about 8.2–8.6% calcium and 5.7–6.0% nitrogen.

  • How it works

Calcium pantothenate dissolves to release pantothenate, which cells use to make coenzyme A and acyl carrier protein. These carry acetyl and fatty-acyl groups through energy metabolism and the synthesis of fats, cholesterol and acetylcholine. Only the D-isomer is used by the body, which is why the optical rotation is tested and why racemic material is labelled by its D-pantothenate equivalent.

  • How it is manufactured

Industrial synthesis starts with an aldol reaction of isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde. The aldehyde is converted to its cyanohydrin and cyclised to racemic pantolactone, which is resolved, chemically or enzymatically, to D-pantolactone; the L-form is racemised and recycled. D-Pantolactone is then condensed with calcium β-alaninate, and the calcium pantothenate is isolated and dried as powder or granules.

  • Role in vitamin formulations

Calcium pantothenate is the usual vitamin B5 source in tablets, capsules and premixes because it is a stable, non-volatile solid that blends evenly with other vitamins and minerals. It is hygroscopic and sensitive to strong acid, alkali and prolonged heat, so tablet makers choose granular or directly compressible forms and keep moisture low in the blend and the pack.

  • What buyers should check

Confirm the form first, D- (CAS 137-08-6) or racemic DL- (CAS 6381-63-1), then the grade. Compare assay, specific optical rotation, pH, loss on drying, calcium and nitrogen content, chlorides, 3-aminopropionic acid and elemental impurities. Feed buyers usually check assay and flow, and tablet makers particle size. Ask for the COA and SDS of the actual batch.

Applications

Uses of Calcium Pantothenate (CAS 137-08-6)

Its main job is vitamin B5 in medicines, supplements, fortified foods and animal feed, with hair care and cell-culture media as smaller, specialised uses.

  1. Oval white tablets piled close together

    Tablets, Capsules and Multivitamins

Calcium pantothenate is the standard vitamin B5 source in B-complex and multivitamin tablets, capsules, syrups and effervescent products, and in medicines for vitamin B deficiency. It is stable, easy to blend and available in granular forms for direct compression.

    Pharma & nutraceutical

  2. Top view of corn flakes in a bowl with milk and a silver spoon

    Food Fortification and Nutrition

FCC food-grade calcium pantothenate is added through vitamin premixes to breakfast cereals, infant formula, clinical and sports nutrition, health drinks and fortified flour, to restore or add vitamin B5. It suits dry blends that are not exposed to high heat for long.

    Food & beverage

  3. A white piglet chewing hay

    Animal Feed Premixes

Feed-grade calcium pantothenate, usually 98%, supplies vitamin B5 in premixes for pigs, poultry, cattle and aquaculture. Deficiency in pigs causes poor growth and a typical goose-stepping gait, so it is a routine premix vitamin. Premix makers look for free-flowing, evenly dispersing material.

    Feed additive

  4. A woman having her hair washed at a salon basin

    Hair and Skin Care

Shampoos, conditioners, hair tonics and some creams use calcium pantothenate as a conditioning ingredient. Panthenol (provitamin B5), the related alcohol, is more common in cosmetics, so confirm which ingredient your formula specifies before ordering, as the two are not interchangeable.

    Personal care

  5. A pair of hands holding a petri dish with red culture medium

    Cell Culture and Microbiology Media

Calcium D-pantothenate is a standard vitamin in cell-culture media and in microbiological growth media used for fermentation and testing, because many cells and organisms cannot make it. These uses call for high-purity material with tight assay and low impurities.

The Chemistry

From Pantolactone to Vitamin B5

Made

Lactone meets β-alanine

Isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde are built up into racemic pantolactone, which is resolved to the D-form. D-Pantolactone is then ring-opened by calcium β-alaninate to give calcium D-pantothenate, which is isolated and dried as a fine powder or granules.

Used

Into tablets, foods and premixes

Calcium pantothenate is blended into vitamin tablets and capsules, food and infant-nutrition premixes and feed premixes, and dissolved into shampoos and culture media. Its high water solubility helps it disperse, but moisture and prolonged heat should be kept low.

Tested

Checked before it ships

Each batch is reported on a COA covering appearance, identification, assay, specific optical rotation, pH, loss on drying, calcium content and impurities such as 3-aminopropionic acid, so your QC team can release it quickly against the pharmacopoeia or feed specification you ordered.

Stored

Dry, cool and tightly closed

Calcium pantothenate is hygroscopic and can cake or lose potency if it takes up moisture or is kept warm. Store bags and drums tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from strong oxidising agents, strong acids and bases, and follow the SDS.

What is Calcium Pantothenate used for?

Calcium pantothenate (CAS 137-08-6) is the vitamin B5 used in B-complex and multivitamin tablets, capsules and syrups, in fortified cereals, infant formula and health drinks, and in vitamin premixes for pigs, poultry and other livestock. Smaller amounts go into shampoos, hair tonics and cell-culture media.

What is the CAS number of Calcium Pantothenate?

The CAS number of calcium D-pantothenate is 137-08-6 and the EC number is 205-278-9. Its formula is C18H32CaN2O10 and its molar mass is 476.53 g/mol. Racemic DL-calcium pantothenate has a different CAS number, 6381-63-1, so quote the CAS number on your enquiry.

Is calcium pantothenate the same as vitamin B5?

Calcium pantothenate is the calcium salt of vitamin B5 (D-pantothenic acid). The free acid is an unstable oil, so the vitamin is almost always supplied, weighed and labelled as calcium D-pantothenate. About 92% of its weight is pantothenic acid.

What is the difference between D- and DL-calcium pantothenate?

Calcium D-pantothenate (CAS 137-08-6) contains only the biologically active D-isomer and is dextrorotatory. DL-calcium pantothenate (CAS 6381-63-1) is a racemic mixture with about half the vitamin activity and an optical rotation close to zero. Pharma and food grades are normally the D-form; check the label and rotation on the COA.

Is calcium pantothenate the same as panthenol?

No. Panthenol (pantothenol) is the alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid, usually supplied as a viscous liquid, and is widely used in cosmetics. Calcium pantothenate is a solid calcium salt of the acid. Both provide vitamin B5 activity, but they are different substances with different CAS numbers and are not interchangeable in a formula.

Which grades of calcium pantothenate do you supply?

We supply pharmacopoeia grades to IP, BP, USP and EP, FCC food grade and 98% feed grade, in powder or granular form, subject to availability. Tell us the grade, the application and any particle-size requirement when you enquire.

How should Calcium Pantothenate be stored?

Keep it in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry and well-ventilated store, protected from moisture and heat and away from strong oxidising agents, acids and bases. It is hygroscopic, so reseal part-used packs promptly. Follow the storage section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

What is the HS code for Calcium Pantothenate?

Calcium pantothenate is generally classified under HS subheading 2936.24, D- or DL-pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and its derivatives. In the Indian tariff it falls under 2936 24 00. Confirm the full code with your customs broker before import or export.

Is Calcium Pantothenate hazardous?

It has low hazard. Most producer SDS list it as not classified, though some supplier SDS mention possible skin, eye or respiratory irritation, and fine dust can form explosive mixtures with air. Read the SDS before handling, and use eye protection, gloves and dust control.

Is Calcium Pantothenate a dangerous good for transport?

Calcium pantothenate is not regulated as a dangerous good for road, sea or air transport and has no UN number. Always check the transport section of the SDS supplied with the batch.

Which documents come with each supply?

We provide a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis (COA), SDS/MSDS and specifications. Additional documents for vendor qualification can be arranged on request.

Can I order trial or sample quantities?

Yes. We handle requirements from samples and trial lots for R&D, formulation and vendor approval up to regular bulk supply for commercial production, subject to product availability.

Where in India do you deliver Calcium Pantothenate?
